| SO YOU'RE MAKING A MOVIE FOR GENERAL EXHIBITION by Colin Usher |
|
12 THINGS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER 1. Who is your audience. (Could be the local church group) 2. Is the topic suitable. (Probably not if it's about the Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras ) 3. Is it the right length. Remember a maximum 7 to 10 minutes for a good movie. It has to be very good to hold audience attention any longer. (The congregation generally falls asleep after 5 minutes of the Sunday sermon) 4. Shorter is better. (This also applies to sermons) 5. Use only clean cuts and if necessary the occasional dissolve. (Fancy stuff can be distracting) 6. If there is something you don't like - remove it. (You can't often do that now can you) 7. If your not completely satisfied, do something about it. (I don't mean complain) |
8. If you're doing a commentary, don't tell the audience the obvious. (They can see what's going on)9. Match your background music to the scenes. (Particularly if you decided to go with the Mardi Gras and to hell with the church group audience) 10. Make sure your sound levels are correct. (If it's too soft they'll be asleep sooner – too loud and somebody is sure to turn it down) 11. And when you think you're finally finished, spend time going over and over it and cut, cut, cut. 12. Then do Number 11 again. Hope you find these hints helpful. Colin Usher; |
